Why the TPMS light is on after a seasonal swap or new tires

The tire-pressure light after a seasonal swap is usually not a puncture. Direct sensors live in the wheel, not in the car. Change the wheels and the vehicle is looking for identification codes that are sitting on the other set, or for sensors that were never fitted to the winter rims. NHTSA’s FMVSS 138 requires the warning. It does not register the new sensors for you. Honda, Toyota, and Schrader publish the next step: a relearn, a calibration, or a second set of IDs.

What the light is required to do

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138 requires a tire-pressure monitoring system on passenger cars and other light vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kg (10,000 pounds) or less, except dual-rear-wheel vehicles. The system must illuminate a low-pressure telltale within 20 minutes when one or more tires, up to all four, is 25 percent or more below the vehicle maker’s recommended cold inflation pressure — or a minimum activation pressure in the standard, whichever is higher. NHTSA’s consumer TireWise page is the plain-language version: model year 2008 and newer passenger cars, light trucks, and vans must have TPMS; some 2006 and 2007 vehicles have it as well.

The same standard requires a malfunction indicator. On vehicles that combine that lamp with the low-pressure telltale, the light flashes for about one minute and then stays on. NHTSA tells owners that sequence will repeat at every start until the fault is corrected. FMVSS 138’s required owner’s-manual text is specific about aftermarket wheels:

TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from functioning properly. Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function properly.

A solid low-pressure lamp after a swap can still mean a tire is down. A flashing-then-solid lamp is the malfunction the standard wrote for a missing, dead, or unrecognized sensor. Check the pressures with a gauge first. The light is not a substitute for that check — NHTSA and Transport Canada both say so.

Sensors stay with the wheel

NHTSA describes two designs. A direct system uses sensors in the tires. An indirect system uses wheel-speed and other vehicle sensors and does not put a battery-powered transmitter in each rim. Most seasonal-swap complaints are direct systems, because the hardware moves with the wheel.

Continental Automotive, which supplies original-equipment TPMS, describes a direct sensor as battery-fed, “mounted on the rim and integrated into the valve,” sending a coded radio signal to a receiver. Schrader, another original-equipment and aftermarket maker, sells that valve in two mechanical forms:

  • A rubber snap-in stem, which pushes through the valve hole like a conventional tubeless valve.
  • An aluminum clamp-in stem, held with a nut and grommet from inside the rim. Schrader rates its adjustable-angle clamp-in stem for high-speed use.

Either way the electronics are on the wheel. Dismount the tire and the sensor stays on the rim unless a technician removes it. Swap a summer wheel set for a winter set and the car’s receiver is still listening for last season’s identification codes. Mount new tires on the same rims and the original sensors usually stay; the light that follows is more often a pressure or calibration issue than a new part.

Relearn, reprogram, calibrate

A direct sensor has a unique ID. Toyota’s 2022 86 owner’s manual: when a tire-pressure warning valve and transmitter is replaced, that ID has to be registered. The same manual lets a dealer register two complete sets:

The ID codes of the tire pressure warning valve and transmitters for two sets of wheels can be registered. It is not necessary to register the ID codes when replacing normal tires with snow tires, if the ID codes for the wheels of both normal tires and snow tires are registered beforehand.

Once both sets are stored, the driver can change which set is active. If only the summer IDs are in the module, a winter swap looks like four missing sensors. That is a relearn, not a flat.

Some vehicles relearn by driving. Some need a scan tool or a stationary procedure in the owner’s manual. Aftermarket programmable sensors, including Schrader’s EZ-sensor line, have a second step in front of that relearn: the sensor itself has to be written with the vehicle’s protocol before it is installed. Programming the blank and teaching the car the new IDs are different jobs.

Honda’s 2025 Civic is the other common case. That TPMS does not measure pressure in each tire. It compares rolling radius and rotational characteristics while you drive — an indirect system. There is no wheel sensor to swap. Honda still requires a calibration every time you adjust pressure, rotate the tires, or replace one or more tires, then about 30 minutes of driving between 50 and 100 km/h (31–62 mph). A Civic that still shows the lamp after a seasonal mount is often an unfinished calibration, not a dead transmitter.

Dead batteries

On a direct system the battery is sealed inside the sensor. Continental Automotive’s description is “battery-fed.” Honda’s published TPMS service information says that battery is internally sealed, is not separately replaceable, and is designed for an operational life of 7 to 10 years. When the charge is too low, the malfunction indicator comes on and the system stops monitoring pressure. Honda also notes that if one sensor is low, the others are often near the same age, which is why a dealer may recommend replacing the set.

That 7-to-10-year figure is Honda’s published design life, not a federal requirement and not a number every maker prints. FMVSS 138 does not specify a battery service interval. A ten-year-old original sensor that goes quiet the week the winters go on is a common driveway coincidence, not a defect in the new tire.

Winter and summer sets, OEM and aftermarket

A vehicle with direct TPMS needs a working sensor in each road wheel it is currently using. A second wheel set without sensors will light the malfunction lamp after the swap. Toyota’s two-set registration is how some makers planned for snow tires. Other vehicles need the new IDs written at each changeover. Indirect systems, such as the Civic above, do not need a second set of transmitters; they need a calibration after the swap.

Original-equipment sensors are built for that vehicle’s protocol and valve hole. Aftermarket sensors can work if they are programmed to the same protocol and then relearned. FMVSS 138 is technology-neutral — direct or indirect is allowed — but it is not a fitment guarantee. The required manual language is the warning: replacement wheels can prevent the system from functioning. Always check the telltale after the work. A cheap stem that does not transmit, or a clamp-in sensor in a hole it was not made for, is a malfunction the standard already told the owner to expect.

What this means on a driveway

If the pressures are at the placard and the lamp is still on after a seasonal swap, the question is which system the vehicle has. Direct: are there sensors in these wheels, do their batteries still transmit, and has the vehicle been taught the IDs. Indirect: has the calibration been started and driven out. New tires on the original rims usually keep the original sensors; the light is then pressure, damage from the mount, or a battery that was already at the end of its life.

That is the procedure in FMVSS 138, NHTSA’s consumer page, Honda’s and Toyota’s manuals, and Schrader’s and Continental’s hardware descriptions. It is not a registry rule, and it is not a verification of any operator. The owner’s manual for the vehicle in front of you is the document that names the relearn.

Questions that come up

I just swapped winters and the light is on. Are the new tires leaking?

Check the pressures with a gauge first. If they are at the placard, a direct-system vehicle is often looking for last season’s sensor IDs, or for sensors that were never fitted to this wheel set. An indirect-system Honda needs a calibration drive, not a new transmitter.

Do winter wheels need their own sensors?

On a direct TPMS, yes — each road wheel the vehicle is using needs a working sensor. Toyota’s 86 manual lets a dealer store a second set of IDs so snow tires do not have to be re-registered every fall. Indirect systems do not use wheel-mounted sensors.

How long does a TPMS battery last?

Honda’s published service information: 7 to 10 years, sealed inside the sensor, not replaceable on its own. That is Honda’s figure, not a federal interval. FMVSS 138 does not set a battery life. When the battery is exhausted, the sensor is replaced.

Will an aftermarket sensor work?

It can, if it is programmed to the vehicle’s protocol and then relearned. Schrader’s aftermarket EZ-sensor is sold in snap-in and clamp-in stems for that job. FMVSS 138 still tells the owner to confirm the malfunction telltale is off after any replacement wheel or tire.
